Victorian Villa

West Ealing

Period End of terrace back to brick refurbishment with two storey side extension located in West Ealing conservation area to create modern family home.

Brief

The project brief was to create ground floor open plan extension leading to rear garden with two storey side extension creating mirror image with neighbour which adds unity to the whole terrace and completes the unified appearance. The property has been previously extended by virtue of an additional rear single-storey ground floor extension and side single-storey side extension.

Design

Looking from the street, the aim of the proposed forms is to merge with the terrace and unify the whole group in the symmetrical classical tradition. The rear addition has traditional form with contemporary detailing with an aim to create modern structure while maintaining the unity of the whole building. The order created by new additions respects the community while allowing for the modern human life behind.

Result

The intention of the proposal is to introduce spacious living areas into a period house as a modern necessity, where it will be least intrusive and slip easily into the overall life of its architectural development. In sum provide a more comfortable and usable space suitable for modern living, while preserving as much of the lost character as possible.
