Victorian Townhouse

Inslington

Extensive refurbishment, new full-sized basement and a full-width contemporary glass extension with bi-folding doors creating a prized ‘inside outside’ feeling. The five-story terraced property in Highbury is located in a conservation area and has been granted planning permission by Highbury & Islington Council.

Brief

Our brief was to retain the period exterior character of the building but to increase its footprint and open up the basement and ground levels of the house with a large glass extension to create a vast new kitchen and entertainment area. This would need to be achieved without contravening local planning restrictions.

Design

After the clients’ own unsuccessful initial planning applications, Building Designs was approached to to advise on a strategic approach and to design the desired additions. After careful consideration, the rear extension has been designed and built under Permitted Development 3m rule accommodating a new kitchen area and allowing a series of fragmented spaces to connect into one, impressive glazed space.

Result

The family was delighted with the expansive feeling of openness and space we created. This feeling has been intensified even more by white, seamless continuous surfaces flowing from the floor up the stairs and a rather minimal palette of materials. Building Designs always aims to deliver the ‘wow factor’ to impress while simultaneously adding value to your property.

 What client said

We are very thankful to Building Designs for leading us through what appears to be very obscure planning system and for bringing our ideas into a spotless reality.
